Win98SE: How does Multiple Users it work?
Question is how does Multiple User Options work on win98se? Will this keep a second user from messing up system settings, and/or compromise virus, malware, privacy security? Using Firefox as default browser, have AVG free version installed.
Problem is that I hav to allow my house-mate use of my PC which is a dualboot win98se and slack8 I am using to learn with. She needs access to ms word and internet for job related educational research. My last hard drive was absolutely trashed by viruses and malware because she plays games online although she denies it. Anyway I have a new 160gb hdd of which I am only using 130gb b/c thats all win98se sees. Oh well. Thnx

98 doesn't really have much security. The multiple users option just gives users their own desktop and documents folders.

To improve your chances of blocking viruses & malware:
1) Make sure the antivirus is current and runs whenever the computer is on. 2) Make sure to stay up-to-date with the Security Patches at Windows Update (yes, it still is available for Windows 98) 3) Try a real-time spyware blocker: Webroot's SpySweeper is highly rated & currently available for free at Circuit City (via a $20 rebate). I've heard a title called SpywareBlaster recommended, which I believe has a free-trial version, but I haven't tried that one myself. 4) Put the machine behind a hardware firewall (most routers have one) if it's not already. Best of luck . . . Gary |
