merging partitions

im trying to merge 2 paritions. I have a SaTa 120Gb HD that is broken up into two paritions.

F:\ which is 104Gb and G:\ with the remaining 10Gb

Im trying to use ParitionMagic Pro 7 to merge F:\ and g:\

I can get all the way to the screen asking me to confirm mering F:\ and g:\ into one HD of 114Gb. but after pressing continue, it hangs for a second and gives me this erorr:

____

The first parition (f:\) requires 2509602KB of data to be freed to perform the merge.

____

Also, when right clicking on the HD in My Computer. It says the Full size of the HD is 10GB, but only 9.45Gb of free space. But the HD is empty. It contains no folders or files. I unchecked the "dont show hidden or system files" option.

Weird.

thanks!

Update:

I had only unchecked "dont show hidden files or folders", I also unchecked the "dont show system files" and then three documents appeared:

RECYLED
RECYCLER
System Volume Information

What are these three files about?

My OS (win XP pro) is on another ATA HD (drive c:\)

That's the space reserved for the recycle bin and the NTFS master file table. It's normal.

If the F drive is full or almost full, that's the reason for the merge error. It's telling you that you need at least 2.5gb more free space on the partition before it will perform the operation.

Instead of merging, try this - delete the 10gb partition. Then expand the remaining partition.

glc, congratulations on Admin position!
Its been a while since I posted here.

Ok, drive F:\ has about 4.69 Gb free. Why doesnt it merge?
Now when I try merging, it says the same error except the amount needed changed from 2.5Gb to 803699KB.

How do I delete and expand it using PartionMagic?

You don't even have to use PM to delete the partition - just use Windows disk management. Then use PM to resize the remaining partition.

It doesn't merge because you still don't have enough free space.

But 4.69GB is greater than 0.80 Gb ?

How do I use Disk Management? I prefer to do this through windows interface not DOS.

Doesn't matter. It needs a lot of temp space to do the operation.

Right click on My Computer, Manage. Disk Management.
