How to copy folders along with their icons?
When i copy folders from a CD/ROM to the hard disk, say into the My Documents folder, the copies are transferred ok;
apart from the fact that the folders' icons (on the CD/ROM) are not copied, [I mean the icons you can set by : right-click on a folder - Properties-Customize-Folders icons-Change Icon]. So the folders copied into My Documents just retain their default icons. How can i copy folders from CD to hard disk, along with their icons?

Why does it happen?
When you customize a folder with an icon called desktop.ini gets created within the folder itself with info like this Quote:
When you copy the folder, even if you copy the icon library file.dll it will usually will not work because the path has changed. The only workaround was if the CD author had used common XP system icons from common system icon libraries something like IconFile=%SystemRoot%\system32\SHELL32.dll is more generic. An easy way to get back your folder icons back is to (a) turn off "Hide protected operating system files from folder options > view tab (b) open desktop.ini from the folders and point it to the icon library with the correct path. Or if all the folder icons are same, you could customize one such folder and then copy desktop.ini to all the folders. If you are interested in doing one of the above, post back here there are a couple more nuances that will help .. I can type it out depending on what you're trying to do... its wasteful if all you're doing is trying to find out why? ![]() HTH Last edited by Statica; 11-24-2005 at 12:39 PM. That's a pretty informative post, Statica; it might make a good "Tip of the Day!"
