Deleting files over the network

So, I just deleted a file over the network (ie had another comp's my documents folder shared, and while in that, I deleted a file via the delete key.)

Sadly, it was a mistake. Now, I can put it back together from memory, wasn't a big deal, but where do files that deleted via network shares go? It wasn't in either recycle bin, and 2 different data recovery programs couldn't find it.

Very curious about this, as I would have expected to find it somewhere.

Well, I kind of figured that one out already. What I'm trying to learn is where they go. I googled around and couldn't find any answers on the topic, so....

I think what you`re asking is....."where do deleted files go?" Basically nowhere.

When you delete a file you are only deleting the portion of the file that "points" to the files location on the hard drive, known as the pointer. The file itself is still intact but the read\write head of the hard drive doesn`t see it anymore and interprets the space occupied by the file as empty and available to be overwritten.

It works the same way if it is a local drive or a network drive.

As far as data recovery. It all depends if the file was overwritten between the time it was deleted and when you ran yor data recovery program.
