Wierd driver problem in windows 2000 pro

Ive got a wierd one here. WOrking on a computer that was having a problem that when it connected to the internet, it would reboot the computer after being on the net after about 3 minutes. Would get a blue screen saying some kind of hardware error. Well, this happened right after someone plugged in a USB flash drive. Anyway, I uninstalled the usb flash drive and now when the pc boots up and windows comes up, the modem wont install. It is being detected but when the drivers go to install, it gets to a point where it says it cant find a file even though the file is showing in the location. I have the original driver cd and even downloaded others but it keeps asking for a file even though the file is there. I just keep hitting retry but it wont move on past that file. Also, it is doing the same thing for Roxio cd creator and Office 2000 now. It says it needs the cd where the install file is and I have both cd's and the files it is asking for is showing right there but it wont take it. I just keep hitting retry and it keeps asking for the file. Anybody else have this happen? ANy info would be helpful.

Did you scan your computer for malware???
And try removing the modem from device manager and then install it again!!!
