Scanner will not work on boot up.

I have a hp scanjet 5P scanner and ever since I installed ME on my pc I
cannot get the scsi board to recognize the scanner. I guess that is what I
am trying to say.
If I turn the scanner on first then boot, or reboot then the scanner and all
the software is there and everything is fully functional.
As soon as I turn the pc off, then tomorrow or whenever I want to scan again
no scanner. I have to install new hardware, or reboot. I have tried for 2
years to resolve this issue.
Any one who thinks they can help, please advise me...... Thank-You

Ray-
I had a similar problem with my Epson scanner. I wrote to Epson and they sent me a way to do a "clean install" of the scanner software...it's just a process with a certain order to it. Most likely when you installed ME it messed up the drivers. Try going to the HP site and see if you can find some help there, or just write to HP tech. support...they should send you directions similar to what Epson sent to me.
If HP is not responsive, try first removing the scanner in Device manager, then uninstalling your scanner software. Disconnect the scanner before reboot. Then re-install the software, shut down and reconnect the scanner, and reboot again. This is basically the procedure that Epson suggested to me.
Let us know how you make out......

If the above procedure doesn't help, this might be a good place to start:

Hey Dan,
Is your Epson scanner using a scsi connection, or are you hooked up with a usb or other connection?? Thanks

No, when I view the (View devices by connection) and use refresh my pc crashes and I have to use the reset button to reboot. Now when I view by type and choose the scsi and refresh it it seems to work just fine. Its still not right and I guess from what I read that may be as good as it gets for me. I guess windows ME is not refreshing my scsi board. Thanks for all the help.
