Hi devonXP
. . . and welcome to the PC Mechanic forums. My first question is whether you have your computer set to automatically restart after a system failure. You can check this by right-clicking on the "My Computer" icon on either your Start Menu or your Desktop, then select "Properties", "Advanced", and in the "Startup & Recovery" section, click on "Settings" -> go to the "System Failure" section, and make sure that there is no checkmark in the box next to "Automatically Restart" (it's the third box down in that section). To clear a checkmark, just rest your cursor over the box and click. This will enable you to see an error message rather than rebooting = the error message should help figure what the problem might be. You can post the error here if it doesn't seem to lead to any clear-cut clues. ________________ For the "Fast User Switching" feature (service) to work, check in your Administrative Tools applet for "Services" to make sure that not only is the Fast User Switching service set to automatic, but that also Terminal Services and the Remote Procedure Call services are also set to automatic. [For security, I actually tend to disable both Fast User Switching & Terminal Services - since I don't mind the short delay in exchange for a little extra security]. _________________ If neither the automatic restart tip, nor the Fast User Switching services setup tips yield any help - do you have any "legacy" devices that might not be fully ACPI compliant? Some forums mention troubles with reboots when using fast user switching with 1) APM enabled 2) an early SoundBlaster Live! driver installed and 3) some early Asus motherboards seemed to not have ACPI enabled by default when installing XP. The quick fix tries in those cases were to 1) disable APM 2) update to newer drivers & 3) enable ACPI. __________________ Also make sure to check your Event logs in your Administrative Tools. If they aren't available from your Start/All Programs menus, go to the Control Panel/Performance & Maintenance/Administrative Tools/Event Viewer. An error message might be in there pinpointing the culprit. Best of luck . . . Gary [P.S. ... as usual, whenever inexplicable behavior is cropping up - it's also a good policy to run some thorough scans for malware] Last edited by GaryRouth; 12-02-2005 at 01:35 AM. |
