Windows 98 to 98SE Upgrade

Hello there.

I was just wondering if there was still an upgrade available from Windows 98 to 98SE. If so, where am i able to obtain it. If not, does anyone know what the minimum update is to be able to run ADSL that is currently availble.

Thanks,
Ian

If you can get an Ethernet modem or a modem/router combo, you can run ADSL on any OS that has drivers for your network adapter. The 98 to SE upgrade CD's are hard to find and cost more now than when M$ offered them originally.

You are better off with Ethernet anyway - USB networking is a pain in the arse.

If you do ebay you can find them there.. Some people dont like to use ebay that is user preference.. I for one had only a hand full of problems.. Other than that they are good.. That would be one suggestion, their might be others...

Windows98se was primarily available in one of three versions, not including the one to which you refer. There was a Full version, an OEM version, and an Upgrade (it accepted Win3X, Win95, or Win98 as proof of ownership.)

There was a very short-lived version that I believe was considered to be an "Update", and only worked on a Win98 install. I don't think that version was adequate to perform a clean install with. I never saw it available at retail, myself.

The "Regular" Upgrade was produced in massive quantities, and many thousands, probably, are still available from the various Overstock and Surplus sellers, including on eBay. Quite often, these are sold at eBay on a "Buy it Now" basis for $35 to $50, which is about half of the original retail MSRP.

The update originally sold for $19.95 shipped direct from M$ (that was the only way to get it) and I believe it can be used for a clean install as long as you have a 98FE CD. You can't find them that cheap now, the buy it nows are $39.95 plus shipping.

I stilll have my Win98 se updates disk that I got from Microsoft for $20, and I have tried to do a clean install with it, but it does not fly. You have to have win98fe installed on your harddrive to run the se updates disk, but in your case that should work fine for U since you do have win98fe already on there..

It doesn't fly swapping CD's like all the other upgrade OS CD's?

Just another idea. You don't need the upgrade disk to go from 98FE to 98SE. You can do an over-the-top repair of the FE installation with an SE disk and it will work just fine. Plus you're better off having a full version of 98SE than the upgrade version.

How do you do this repair of the FE with the SE disk? I am trying to upgrade from FE to SE, but I keep getting a message that I first need a windows upgrade...any help is appreciated.

Thanks
Diana
