Problem with Windows XP Media decoder?

I just got a new Dell XPS 600 with Windows Media Center Addition.

Everything seems to be going OK except that when I go to media center and click paly DVD I get this error.

Decoder Error

The media decoder has either malfunctioned or is not installed. Restart Media Center, and or Computer.

Restarting does not help, can anyone tell me how I can fix this?

Mike

Hi Mike

I noticed a similiar thread in one of the other forums. Did you get this straightened out already?

. . . since this is a brand new system, you can either call Dell directly, or run your Recovery Disks. I imagine it was the problematic install of your Cyberlink software that caused the problem. You could also try a System Restore (details are in the Help and Support pages available from your XP Start Menus).

Let us know if it's still having trouble, or if it was a simple fix, you can post your fix here = in case others come across the same problem.

Best of luck
. . . Gary

Hi Gary

I did get it resolved but it wasn't easy.

I reinstalled every driver etc on my Dell recovery disk and that didn't help.

I downloaded and installed the mpeg codecs from Microsoft and that didn't help either.

Finally I downloaded and installed the mpeg2 decoders from Nvidia and that solved the problem. Now I'm going to have to pay them, (I'm using the free trial) but at least they work.

I know it worked before I tried to install, Power DVD but I can't find the decoders on any disks that I have and I couldn’t find a free download of them any place either.

Thanks for the help

Mike
