DAT file?

Hi this may be a silly question so i'm sayiny sorry frist off,
Does any one know what a dat file is and where it may have come from as i have a few dotted about my hard drive called nt user !

".dat" are made by tons of programs.
go here:
http://filext.com
do a search, they give you 'id string' inside different types of ".dat" files
you can then open the ".dat" file(s) in a text editor/wordprocessor and look at the first few characters usually identifies as to what they are and what program made them, when compared to the 'id string'.

Don't mess with the ntuser.dat files - those are essential to the operating system.
