XP boot problem
EDIT: READ SUBSEQUENT POST
while trying to resize one of my partitions with partition magic, i have managed to stop my computer from booting. my HDD used to have partitions as follows (all NTFS): C: old version of XP, got a virus and installed XP on a different partition to copy my files over. D: MP3s (not really important, have them all on my player) E: Current version of XP, loads of programs on it, do not want to have to install them all again. F: My Documents (very important) i was running low on space on F:, so decided to give PM a go and use the currently unused space on C:. as they are not next to each other, this required deleting C:, and moving it to the end next to F:, from there i would be able to resize F: and use the space. so i set up my tasks in PM, it all looks okay, i'm not deleting any partitions (i think) i need. when i click apply it tells me that no partition is set to active, fair enough i think, if it was that important PM would tell me to set another as active. it also says some actions will require a reboot. so the system reboots, and i then get the message "the boot media cannot be found, insert correct boot media into te device and press enter to reboot." (or something like that). i am pretty sure i know what i need to do, it's just i am unable to work out how to do it. i think i need to set E: as the active partition, which i have tried using the XP recovery console and diskpart as per this page (didn't work, came up with the partition manager you get during XP install) and also by using FDISK on a boot disk (didn't work either, partitions didn't show up in the GUI). i also think i need to create a MBR for the drive because i think i deleted it when i deleted C:. thanks for reading, and sorry for the long post, but i thought it was better to give as much information as possible, rather than less than required. okay, a slight development. i have succeeded in booting to a point. by using a windows XP boot disk i have managed to make the partition boot, this has resulted in the rest of the tasks partition magic was meant to do happening. my HDD is now as follows:
E: Current install of XP D: MP3s C: My Documents (now the size i wanted it to be in the first place) (in that order, where E: is at the beginning of the drive) i have now modified my boot.ini file on my boot floppy so that it boots my C: (yay!!!). now the problem is that i can only boot via the floppy, so i need to create a new boot.ini on my HDD and possibly a MBR on my HDD (???). some pointers as to how to do that would be much appreciated.
