Exclamation Computer shutting down for unknown reasons...

Computer Specs...

Dell Dimension 2400
Pentium 4 CPU 2.6GHz
640MB of Ram
XP Home Edition (Service Pack 2)

This problem is happening at my companies computer... The computer I think is about 3 years old (2002)... When the person walks away from her computer, usually the screen saver comes on like usual and it comes back up without a problem... Recently and rarely (once or maybe twice a week) when she comes back to her computer, it is not responding... A orange light is flashing on the front of the computer instead of the usual green light... Her monitor is on but blacked out and her keyboard has lights on it but nothing responds... The only way to bring it back up is to hold the button down and restart (I know it's not good for it)...

I checked the system power saver and everything seems normal...

Monitor - 30 minutes
Hard disks - Never
Standby - Never

And System Hibernation is disabled (off)... I'm sure it's a simple fix but I'm out of ideas at this point... The only thing that comes to mind is that it's getting hot due to dust build up and a safety device is shutting it down... I'm still going to clean out behind the panels with a soft brush but I'm still posting this just in-case it's software related...

Thanks...

P4's will normally "throttle back" when they are running hot. A fan failure will allow excessive heat build up and cause a complete shut down/lockup but that condition would show up more when the system is running than when it is idle. You might want to check which programs are running at startup. One of them may be causing this problem.

Have you looked in Event Viewer?
Control Panel>Administrative Tools>Event Viewer.

I looked through "msconfig" at the startup's and everything is the same as they were prior to this problem...

As for Event Viewer, what am I looking for?? I opened everything up near that time and all they say is "Applicated Starting" and "Application Started"...

Nothing which looks abnormal or any errors were noted...

Hard lock-ups are often caused by failing hardware or hardware incompatibility. I've recently gone thru this and found some Kingston ram to be the problem even tho it tested ok. In your case, with a system that's run fine up til now, it's more likely some hardware piece may be on the way out. First I'd make sure all data is backed up. Then I'd run a test on the memory with Memtest86+ and a hard drive test with the hard drive manufacturer's diagnostic software.
