Computer Name

Is there some text file or something somewhere on a computer that will have the current computer name listed? I know its in the registry but I would prefer to find a file with the same info.

TIA

i believe if you right-click on the destop and view the properties, its some where in there. you can view/change the name.

either that or it may be found somewhere in the control panel.

lol, i know this is a very vauge answer but i remember seeing it somewhere around there and i just can't think of the exact location.

This is "probably" the main spot for it:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\ComputerDescriptions

if not, couldn't you find out the name of the computer and search the registry for it?

I found it in

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet002\Control\ComputerName\ComputerName

I would prefer finding it in a file some where tho...

hmm

what is the advantage of changing the computer name within a file as opposed to within the interface of windows?
