xp install question

Hey everyone,

2 Christmas' ago I bought Windows XP to uprgrade my dell from ME to XP. However it was an upgrade disk that was bought (guess maybe i should have bought a full one?) A few weeks ago I reinstalled and was prompted to reinsert my ME disk that dell game me, i did and it worked. My question, when I do my new build in a few weeks will I be able to use the upgrade disk? I will uninstall XP on my current machine and go back to ME so I will still only be using my one license on XP. Will I be promped to insert my dell disk which i assume won't authenticate with my new hardware. If so, is there a viable workaround or will i definitely have to buy another copy of XP? THanks

STeve

You should be able to install XP on your new machine as long as you have your ME disk handy. The activation isn't anything to worry about.
To stay legit though, do uninstall XP from your other computer before installing it on your new one.

thanks faulkner.... i thought for sure the config was checking my computer to make sure i was upgrading on a dell and would only let me upgrade that computer. so i can use the upgrade disc on a non dell (my new build) to install as long as i have that Dell ME disc? just double checking you knew what i meant
thanks
steve

No problems if it is a full ME copy. If it is a Dell install copy with ME on it you may have problems because it will not see the Dell components.

It should work just fine for installing XP. The Dell OEM OS just prevents you from actualling installing the OS (ME in this case) on a non-Dell.
