c prompt at start up

Hey guys,
I'm helping a long distance friend out with a problem...He told me he fromateed his C drive but now when he restarts...it actually takes him to a windows start up screen, but tells him he's missing a .vmx or .vdx file, and tells him to Ctrl, Alt, Del and restart, and it just keeps him in this loop...How exactly would he get to a c prompt again so he can format his HD properly?

thanks everyone.

Does he have the Install CD? I know with XP you can boot from the XP CD and delete the old partition and reinstall on a new partition.

Boot it with a floppy for the right version of Windows to an A prompt, then type FORMAT C:

What exact version of Windows is he trying to install? 98 and 98SE CD's should be bootable. You *can* format by booting with the CD if you watch to see what letter is assigned to the CD, at the A prompt change to that drive then FORMAT C:
