Standby Mode Disabling Connection

Recently I have been using standby mode around my aprtment because my buddies tend to want to get on my computer so I just hit the "sleep" button before I go anywhere to invoke standby mode and have a password prompt that pops up if the mouse or keyboard are touched. I like this security featre however, whenever my computer goes stand by it disconnects whatever programs are going on, any p2p programs and AIM. So whenever i come back from stand by, I am no longer downloading anything or signed on under my AIM screen name...Any tricks around this? Or any shortcuts that skip right to a screen saver and I can use a password protect on my screensaver?
