Blue Screen Error In Safe Mode.

I cannot open windows 98se on my Dell Dimension 4100. I can get to safe mode, but no further than the display configuration page. At this point I get a blue screen with the following error message.

Invalid VxD dynamic link call from vwin 32(01) = 00000714 to device "0009", service 1.

Can someone help me get back into windows please?

Thank-you.
Julie.

You may have a hardware device failure, or it may be time to reload windows..

I tried to refresh my windows os using the Dell Product Recovery CD, but kept receiving this error message:

"Your hard drive is full. The recovery process has been aborted. You must free up space on your hard drive. You can free up space by emptying your recycle bin or deleting unwanted files"

This same message came up when I also tried to recover my hard drive without formatting from the recovery cd.

I have a huge amount of space on my hard drive....what`s up with that?

Time to run diagnostics on your hardware. The Dell Resource CD should be bootable and has a full diagnostic suite.

MS-DOS seems to be running okay, I can use it at least. Every time I boot without the recovery cd, Microsoft Registry Checker loads and starts to work, ending with:

"Windows has successfully fixed your registry."

I am then prompted to continue, and the next screen that loads (in safe mode) says:

"Your display adapter is not configured properly. To correct the problem, click OK to start the hardware installation wizard."

When I click OK, the blue screen appears with:

"Invalid VxD dynamic link call from vwin 32(01) = 00000714 to device "0009", service 1. Your windows configuration is invalid. Run the windows setup program again to correct the problem."

The Dell Product Recovery CD (the only cd that Dell sent) gives me the "Hard Drive Full" error when I use it.

This all began after running "Registry Mechanic" software. Any ideas guys?

Is wiping the drive and starting from scratch an option? If so, zero fill the drive with the hard drive manufacturer's utility and use the restore CD.

I have tried to "Recover Hard Drive Without Format" from the Dell Product Recovery CD (I have many files that I want to retrieve) but receive the error message:

"Your hard drive is full. The recovery process has been aborted. You must free up space on your hard drive. You can free up space by emptying your recycle bin or deleting unwanted files"

and cannot continue. What else can I do?

Remove the drive, slave it into another working computer, and recover your files. Do this before trying anything else to get the hard drive working properly. Anything you do now to try to fix the hard drive structure MAY be hazardous to your data - the first thing would be to boot with a 98SE startup floppy or CD and run Scandisk on the drive from its DOS interface.

Could I remove the hard drive and place it in a HDD External USB Case, then plug it into my working computers USB port, and retrieve the files?

You may be too late for this but doesn't that registry mechanic software have a backup and restore function to it?? Anytime you mess with the registry, it's a good idea to back it up and know how to restore it if it gets hosed up..

You can try your USB case, it wouldn't hurt.
