Log on Quirk

I changed my log on to show Myself (passworded) or a quest for other family users and now I occassionally get to the Windows xp screen and the text line saying
"Windows is starting up" but nothing happens. It just hangs there and I have to turn off power to get out of it.
If I re-boot using the F8 key and start in "The last known good windows log on"
it will get me there.

What may be causing this?

Hi Jim

Well, it wouldn't hurt to take the usual precautions whenever faced with unusual system behavior - do full system antimalware scans on their "thorough" settings, and from Safe Mode (for those tools that will run in Safe Mode).

Might check in your Administrative Tools to make sure that all the Services you need to have running for your Users setup are indeed either Automatic or Manual. For Fast User Switching, for example, Terminal Services has to be running.

And, of course, you can try a System Restore to a point before you made your changes. If all is well then: it's a software glitch. [And you can try your logon changes again]. It all is not well then: you may need to also check the hardware. A repair installation might also help untangle any driver or configuration issues.

If you figured things already: was it an easy repair?
