Program Uninstall Problem in XP
To make a long story short, while playing an on line game (CS Source) my son's computer crashed/froze. The clock and date settings were wrong and caused AVG (anti virus program we were using) to flip out. We got an error message saying the copy of AVG was damaged and to reinstall it. I tried to reinstall to no avail, tried uninstall and still could not completely get rid of it to try a reinstall.
We then loaded Avast for anti virus protection but at every log in no matter who's profile we still get the AVG message that the files are damaged and to reinstall. I suspect I need to go into the registry and do so editing which brings me here to ask how to remove any and all AVG references safely. I would like to Use the AVG program as I like it better than the Avast which is good too. The OS is XP Pro Thanks in advance for any help yo may be able to provide. The OS is XP Pro.

You will have to delete all folders and registry keys manualy like: C:\Documents and Settings\yours name\Application Data\AVG7 ; C:\Program Files\Grisoft ; HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Grisoft ; HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Grisoft
To enter registry in RUN box type "regedit", to unhidde hidden folders go to My comp > tools > folder options > view > check box by show hidden files and folders!!!

Restore was off. I was able to download a new version of AVG (Dec 2, 05) and had it try to install, got the BSOD at end of install. I restarted windows and AVG was shown in the add remove programs screen. I did a repair install of AVG, deleted Avast and all is good now.

I've had the date issue with AVG on a couple of my machines lately. The real problem is that the date in the computer is wrong and therefore doesn't match up with AVG data base. Here's what I do to fix it. First reset the date on the pc, right click on the time in the lower right and select "adjust date/time". Make the necessary changes and close that window. Next, right click on the AVG icon in the lower right, select "Launch AVG Control Center". The "Internal Virus Database" will be displayed in red. Right click on it and select "check date". It will sync with the pc's clock and you can close any open windows.
I know you have yours fixed now BR but I thought this might be helpful to anyone that finds this and needs a repair idea. |

Thanks for the info Panama, it looks as if your way would have been a lot simpler than mine. I'll try and remember that in the future if needed.
