xp clean install?
hi,
I was planning to install winxp pro onto a older pc of mine, it's got win98 running on it, meets xp requirements for hardware, but i wasn't sure how to do a clean install. I've updated another win98 box to winxp, but that kept all the documents/file already on the box. what i wanted to do was a full clean install, including removing all the files not related to win98, a clean start. could someone tell me or point me to a guide with the info? just need to know what to do during the install to get it to wipe the drive clean. thanks. |

so you want to format the drive right??, youll need an Windows Xp CD to do so, not an upgrade cd

Sony: If you don't have anything on the hard drive you want or need to keep, you can just zero-fill it to get rid of the Win98 installation. Then just do a regular WinXP Pro install on the clean hard drive. If you have an upgrade WinXP Pro CD you can still do a clean install, you just need the OS CD from a previous version of WinME or Win98 (Win95 won't work) handy. The WinXP Pro installer will ask to check for a qualifying OS and you just point the installer to the optical drive the CD is in. Cricket

i meant, since he bought an windows upgrade, it would of been better buying a original windows XP.
If not youll need the previous OS CD for the windows Upgrade. |

hi,
thanks for the response, i actually do have the upgrade cd for winxp only, i'm not sure if i have the win98 one though, it came installed on the pc long time back. i guess i could just upgrade it and then remove the programs through windows, just thought there might be a way to clean install with the upgrade cd as well. oh well, thanks again!

If you don't have the previous Win OS CD you can borrow one from a friend. All the WinXP upgrade CD installer is going to do is check for a qualifying previous OS...Win98, WinME or Win2000. On the WinXP upgrade installer knows there is a qualifying OS it'll go ahead and do a full install on the hard drive.
