can't find files?

This is my last question and I hope someone can answer it. When I get into windows xp on my new office pc I just built and go to the my computer icon, it can't find anything. There's just that flashlight moving back and forth. The weird thing is if I defragment the drive it all comes back and then does the same thing next time I start the computer. Also even if the flashlight thing is going on in the my computer icon, the computer management and device manager work like they should. Under computer management I can see all the files that the my computer icon should show. It's one of the most puzzling things I've seen. I hope somebody can help me with this.

Quite a few troubleshooters for file Search hanging up in this article from "24hoursupport" -- some of the interesting ideas include settings for thumbnails and large amounts of .jpg files

If you find a simple fix, post back and let us know which one did the trick!

may be some program is using/accessing the drive at the same time as you tried to open "My Computer"; look at the hd LED in the computer case and see if it red or flashing red, before you access "My Computer", if it is then the HD is busy, therefore no display.

Note: there are programs that uses the HD looooong after you boot it up; you might have to wait for them to finish.
Also, scan for Spyware, virus etc.

if that is not the problem, do the following might fix it:

I've found the solution, but it also requires editing the Registry:
(o) open HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT and navigate to Drive,
(o) click on [+] sign and then on value Shell,
(o) right click on String value [ab] (Default) on the right side of the window, (o) modify Value data to none,
(o) and that's all. It worked for me and I hope it works for you )
