WinXP self logoff

When my ASUS laptop finishes booting and I go to signon on WinXP pro, my password is accepted and it starts to login but then it stops and logs me back out. I can signon in safe mode and see all my files and programs but not the normal signon. I've run System mechanic and Registry Mechanic but there are no problems listed. Is there anything I can run to repair the normal signon.
Thanks for the help,
Stan

It's possible your user account has gotten corrupted somehow.

In Safe Mode in the main Administrator account, set up a new user account with administrator priviledges. Boot into the new user account. If it works okay, you might want to use the directions in the Microsoft Knowledge Base article, How to copy data from a corrupted user profile to a new profile than to spend hours troubleshooting the old account.

I created a new signon and that also has the same problem of logging off immediately after I signed in with the new signon. The new signon works with safe mode. I also tried restoring to a previous restore point but it is not accepted. I have even done a clean install and the signon's still logs off immediately. Is there anything else that I can try before a reformat and new XP install?

This is a long shot, but do you have something either in your Start Up menu or your registry startup list which runs a script which would do this? Sounds like a clever prank for some virus or mal-ware.

You can check your startup programs and locations by going to Start > Program > Accessories > System Tools > System Information > Startup Programs.
