Workgroup Computer Not Accessible - The Network Path Was Not Found
I'd really appreciate some help with a Windows networking problem I've been having in my home. Anybody with experience that can provide a solution, I'd really appreciate it.
I've setup a home network with two PCs running Win XP Pro. I know how to setup simple networks like this, done it many times. The two PCs are connected to a LinkSys WRT54G router. One is hardwired to it while the other is wireless. I go through the Network Setup Wizard to establish the network, allow for file/print sharing, and assign a common Workgroup name. When I then go into Network Neighborhood on each computer I do see the other computer. However, when I click on the other computer to see the shared folders and printers I get the following error: \\ComputerName not found. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to see if you have access permissions. The network path was not found. I can't seem to get past this error. I've turned off Windows Firewall in each computer. Even turned off the firewall in the LinkSys router. Neither of these actions helped. I've also tried with Simple File Sharing turned ON, and turned OFF. No luck either. HELP!!!! |

The quick risky thing to do is to enable the guest user account. Or create an identical user name and password on the second pc.

Could you temporarily wire in the other PC so you could isolate trouble to see if it has to do with the fact that the one PC is wireless..

sometimes you got to reboot the network like this.
turn everything off, turn on the modem and Wait for link, then turn on the router, wait for link . then turn on each computer one at a time and everything should work fine. |

Router problems
One thing to check, If you're running Norton Internet Security and you have norton's personal firewall on, then you will have to disable it or configure it to allow certain ip addresses, ie a range of ip addresses as trusted. If both pc's are on the same subnet which I assume they are being connected to the router wirelessly or wired generally makes no difference, (when the router acts as a DHCP server it should dish out the same scheme, generally 192.168.1.xxx with a class c subnet) and you can see the other computer in the workgroup then your connections are correct it's the permissions that are probably off. One more thing to check, if you have the same user name on each machine (I think I read that) that will cause a conflict, so you need to create a new user profile that is different than on the other machine, since it's seeing the same user logged into 2 different machines on the network. The same thing is true about the computer names, they have to be unique as well...
