Hi xymox7

Looks like you deleted a file or two too many. The missing files are fairly critical to Windows ME performing like it should. Anytime you're not sure about a process (if you want to know if it might be spyware, or if it's a legitimate and important system file), you can try checking such files at sites like AnswersThatWork.com (click the link that says "Task List") or at sysinfo.org (and look in the section "Startup Info").

First try:
See if you can boot into Safe Mode. Try tapping the F8 key as soon as you hear the single beep from the motherboard that signals that the Power On Self Test (the POST) has finished OK. If this yields the Boot menu, choose Safe Mode from the list, and attempt to run a System Restore from there.

Second try:
It's possible that System Restore will be missing too many files to run properly. To restore these files, you can try extracting them one by one & placing them where they should be [http://support.microsoft.com/kb/q129605/ ], or you can try an over-the-top reinstall of Windows Me [http://forum.pcmech.com/showthread.php?t=70846 ]. If your system won't boot from a bootable Windows Me CD, you can use a startup floppy diskette (either one you made, one from Hp, or a WinMe diskette from http://www.bootdisk.com).

Pay attention to the details: and if you do the over-the-top, be sure to be disconnected from networks during the procedure - then head straight to Windows Update for Security patches when you go online again (and also make sure your firewall and antivirus are running before reconnecting to networks - especially the Internet).

Best of luck
. . . Gary
