xp on sata

Hello:

I'm considering a new build and using sata as my boot driver. Is there anything special I need to consider? Also, I was wondering if my XP needs sp2 on the CD to see the sata drive and install windows on it?

tia,

klutz

You'll need SP1 or SP2 in order to see the full capacity of large drives. That's true for SATA or PATA. Only thing "special" with SATA is loading the drivers if they aren't native to the mobo.

No. Native means integrated into the chipset.

If the ports are controlled by a separate controller chip, they're not native, and you'd need drivers for it. And it's not even something special with SATA. It's the same with PATA as well.

Basically SATA and PATA are no different when it comes to the installation of Windows. Only difference is the installation of the drive itself in the computer.

"Native" meaning the drivers are built into the chipset so no additional drivers are necessary in order to recognize and initialize the drive.

ok,

Lets say i've got to install drivers (ASUS A8N5X board under consideration) during installation, but i don't have a floppy drive. What do I do or can I do? I was considering not including one. (I'm either none or a 9-in-1.)

I'm considering a new build for a mobile gamer/officer/multi-tasker out off a Landboy (any Case that could be substituted for a good mover PM or e-mail me) and a LCD Moniter and wireless keyboard and mouse. Not to be used as a laptop, as all my friends friends have poked fun at, but an actual tower system made to quickly pack-up and go. This is going to be a semi-mobil beast that I can take with me. Not to completely railroad this thread, but I thought some added info was in order.

Use a floppy from another machine temporarily just to install the SATA drivers. That's the easiest way. You don't have to physically mount it in the machine, just hook up the power connector and the cable and set it on the table.
