Automatic Shutdown

Working on a friend's IBM system with Windows 98. The owner claims it used to shut down completely going through the regular shutdown from Windows . Now he gets the "OK to shutdown your computer" message and must press the power button to shut the system off.

Is there a setting in either Windows or CMOS to set so it will do a complete shutdown?

This may explain the issue and how to fix it.

Here's another, more likely fix. Enabling Advanced Power Management

"Right-click on My Computer, select Properties, and click the Device Manager tab. Double-click the System Devices branch to expand it. Double-click Advanced Power Management Support in the device list. Click the Settings tab. Click the Enable Power Management check box to clear it. Click OK until you return to Control Panel.

WIN98 SE NOTE: This box does not exist in Win98 SE. Disable APM from Control Panel | Power."
