msconfig won't load in Win98se

Hi folks,

Hope everyone is well and ready for the big day.

Today while visiting a friend, trying to clean up his PC, I was unable to get msconfig or regedit to open. Any suggestions on why they wouldn't open and/or how to get them to do so?

Sorry folks but I have completely forgotten the make of his PC. I only remember that it is an E machine, ( E-Machine was printed on a label on the front of the cabinet,) while booting it displays a big E for a few moments before the Windows 98 screen takes over. I do remember that it is a Pentium II and that he only has 32 mgs of RAM. The OS is as stated above, Win98se.

Merry Christmas and happy holidays to all.

I'll bet you $100 it's infected.

Visit this site and see if you can clean it. http://housecall.trendmicro.com/

I'd also see if your friend has a virus program that is up to date.

If he doesn't get Free AVG

Also run an anti spyware program like Ad aware, or Spybot S&D, even Microsoft® Windows AntiSpyware (Beta) is a good program to use.

If the system is clean then take a look at this site, http://www.perfectdrivers.com/howto/msconfig.html, maybe you can download it and install the file.

Here's what some of the files are for, http://webs.davis.k12.ut.us/lzabriskie/MSConfig.pdf, it might be of help once you get it working.

Thank you for the reply Marke522 & ExyStvy.

I never thought of a virus/trojan and I should have. If it had been my machine, running Ad Aware, spybot, AVG and then hijack this, would have been the very first thing I would have done. He only has Norton Anti-virus so I will have to install the others.

EGAD!!! He uses NORTON?!?!

Well there's half your trouble right there.

I had Norton for a year, it was free with some hardware I bought. Didn't like it.

I wonder if he keeps it updated.

If you use a different antivirus your friend may find his computer feeling a lot more alive. Norton uses a LOT of resources.
