Win XP Recovery Console Pains and problems

For some reason, when I run the recovery console on a lot of machines it asks for an administrator password even if there isn't one set. Now I tried to just leave it blank and hit enter but it says the pass isn't valid. Is this an issue with a lot of machines or is there a setting that has to be played with?

The password will be the main/system/default/admin password.

On machines where you know what the password is the following is a nice little function:

This may help http://support.microsoft.com/kb/308402/ along with what EzyStvy suggested.
