windows XP activation question

is there a limit to the number of time Windows XP can be re-installed on a hard drive on the same computer without been activated ?

I am currently trying to decide whether it is better idea to buy the full version of Windows 2000 or whether I should buy Windows XP and then reinstalled it on my hard drive every 30 days so that I do not have to activate it.

just curious, but is there any particular reason you don't want to activate it? that seems like an awful lot of work to go through to not activate a product that you are buying/paid for. if that is your main concern with xp, then i guess i would just stick with 2000, but there is no reason to not activate it

Why don't you want to activate it? It's a painless online process.

I wil be doing a couple of major hardwares upgrade projects on the pc at a later date.

I will be upgrading the mobo/cpu etc at a later date.

I have no choice but to reinstalled windows XP every 30 days.

This is MS fault.

No, that's not true. If you make hardware changes, you will just have to activate it again, not install Windows again. In fact, we have a thread on how to move a hard drive with Windows to a new motherboard. There is no need to reinstall and lose everything.

yes afaik it doesn't harm the hard drive, but as said above it is not necessary, you just do a repair install after you switch motherboards, or if you're not switching motherboard, then the next time you boot up it will just ask you to activate again

No, it's not going to harm the hard drive, but I think you will have to completely erase everything on the drive before you re-install.

You don't need to do that, though. It's pretty silly to have to erase all your data every month to fix a problem that does not exist.

Thank You for answering my questions about Windows XP.

In my opinion it is not silly to reinstall XP every 30 days in order to avoid activating Windows XP.

Well, since there is no reason to avoid activating it (M$ is not spying on you), and since you will have to wipe the hard drive every 30 days, it does seem silly. I'm still not sure what problem you are trying to avoid.

what we are all trying to say here is that if the problem is genuine as you stated it, it is a completely painless process to re-activate it once you do change hardware. it seems as if you are creating more of a problem for yourself, when all you have to do is activate it once and then if you change the hardware it may ask you to activate it again.

Honestly, it won't hurt to activate it on your current configuration and then reactivate it on your new configuration. I have used my same copy on my new machine when I upgraded a year or so ago. No problems activating it.

Sounds like you don't have a XP license and you are trying to get around the security features.

after reading all of the posts about why I should go ahead and activate xp instead of re-installing xp every 30 days on the hard drive I have decide to buy Windows 2000 instead of XP.

I will be swapping in and out of the case a couple of different motherboards on a weekly basis and doing several other upgrade projects on my PC with a short time span.
I see no point in having to call MS every time I get the urge to tinker with the hardwares on my PC.
