lost graphics on win 98

Cleaning up a friends computer and lost most graphics and colors. I did so much I am not sure what I deleted that was important. I installed spybots, adaware, and avg free. I also removed bearshare, quicktime, and real player. I kept rebooting to make sure the changes were taking place. On the last reboot the computer went to pretty much black and white, and lost speed. Is it possible that the ram is full (64m). What did I erase that made the computer do this? Thanks for any replies.

Not sure, I rebooted after about every 2 changes and I did so many changes I am not sure. Everything is still there but it is poor and mostly in black and white. The last thing I deleted was real player and quik time. I tried to reinstall real player but I was missing a .dll file.

What I am asking is right now, when you turn the PC on, at what point does the display go funky, and I would try safe mode and see if I could trouble shoot from there. You may be able to get into device manager and remove your display adapter, then reboot and let windows reinstall the drivers for the display and that may fix it.

The computer still works, it is the graphics that are messed up. You can see everything, it is just blurry and in black and white. On reboot, the windows symbol is good, it is when the desktop shows up, it goes bad. I am not familiar with win 98, and I do not have the disks for it. Thank you for your time and help.

Do you know how to get to display properties?? We need to check there and see if things got messed up, and we also need to check device manager. If there is nothing in display properties that can be fixxed I would probably access the device manager and remove the display adapter and reboot and let windows reload it, that should work without needing the win98 disk..

I think I found the problem, we messed around with the display themes. Sorry about the bad decription, basically we lost the color. Everything works fine, it is just to bright with no color. I was messing around with the appearance properties but cant get it right. Is there a way to set it to default settings, I cant find it.

Found the default settings and it helped some. It is like the colors are zoomed in. You can see some black pixels and it is a little fuzzy. I have clouds as the background and the sky part is grey instead of blue. Thanks for any replies.

If the clouds are gray, you are in 16 color standard VGA mode. You may need to reinstall the video drivers.

Thanks for the reply. How do I tell what video driver I need, it is not my computer. Is real player necessary for win 98, because I uninstalled it?

No, Real Player is not necessary. Open device manager, what does it have in Display Adapters - and is it flagged?

Found the problem, you were correct on the 16 color standard VGA. I switched it to 256 true color and rebooted. This fixed the problem. Thank you very much, I appreciate your help.
