Question Win 98 System File Error Message

After installing Win 98 SE onto a ThinkPad 380Z laptop, I then tried installing
a Windows program (“FrontPage 2002”). I managed to install 90% of the program, then the Win 98 OS hit me with an error message (in so many words):"Error 25506: Cannot install this program...need System files update...you have ASYCFILT.DLL v. 2.40.4[etc.], and you need ASYCFILT v. 2.40.4277.1 [in Windows\System\....]"

Where do I find this System file? How does it get installed?

Thanks for any feedback....

Had you updated your 98SE install with the latest patches from MS yet?

No, because the 380Z doesn't have a PCMCIA Card Modem yet. However, I am
able to download files with my regular desktop PC (W2K OS).

Try this procedure from a Microsoft Knowledge Base article. I haven't had to try this repair myself, but it looks like it should work: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/301064/

The nice thing about the procedure is that you can use the Office CD to manage the repair.

Best of luck

Question

Will that work with Office 97? I don't have Office XP or Office 2000....

If not, is there another way to retrieve and install the required version of the
file, ASYCFILT.DLL v. 2.40.4277.1?

Thanks for the feedback.

The article Gary linked to is your answer - you should be able to find OAINST.EXE on the Front Page 2002 CD. You actually have 9 files that need to be updated.
