\windows\system32\config\software is missing
When trying to start Windows XP SP2, I was getting an error stating that the \windows\system32\config\system file was missing. I logged into the recovery console and fixed this problem by copying the file from the \windows\repair folder. After that, when booting, it will show the Windows XP splash screen, but then quickly shows an error saying that the \windows\system32\config\software file is missing.
I tried to log back into the recovery console to copy this file from the repair folder as well, but it is asking for an Administrator password and it isn't accepting the correct password...... Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

If you didn't set a password when installing XP just hit enter.

Tried that, it doesn't work. Plus, there was an administrator password.

If you have a computer administrator account Open User Accounts in Control Panel. Click your account name. Click Change my password. In Type your current password, type your current password. In Type a new password and Type the new password again to confirm, type your new password. You can also enter descriptive or meaningful text in Type a word or phrase to use as a password hint to help you remember your password. Click Change Password. If that doesn't work give this a try http://support.microsoft.com/kb/308402/ You may want to use this in the future to prevent the problem from happening again http://support.microsoft.com/kb/312149/en-us. codered, it's kinda hard to get into control panel when Windows won't start.
s_layton, at this point it may be best to "nuke and pave" - at the very least, you are probably going to have to repair reinstall Windows. Your registry is damaged. I'd pull the drive or use some kind of live CD and get your data files off it before trying any more solutions. |
