Howdy,
I have created a personal server for my home enviroment, in which will be used to store my media and files. I already have computers in my house that, of course, have files on them. I have yet to have found out a way to make my computers dependant on the server to log in, like most businesses and school do it. I would like to set it up as roaming profile, and the files transferred to the server for storage. I am new to the server field, so this may be a simple problem in to which I am overlooking. How do I make my computers server dependant? Do I need a domain, or will the workgroup work fine? Bryan |

You need to set up a domain. What OS do the other computers have? In order to log into a domain, you need to have XP Pro. XP Home will not allow you to log into a domain. Simple peer-to-peer networking using a workgroup will allow you to share files, but you don't actually log in to the server.

All the computers I want to connect to it use Windows XP Pro. All I have to do now is figure out how to create a domain. Thank you, Doctorgonzo.

Windows 2003 server
To create a domain you need to have the dns server installed on the y2k3
server, then you need to install active directory on the y2k3 server.

You can install a domain on either Windows 2000 or Windows 2003. Just run "dcpromo" from the Start > Run menu.
