XP Pro OEM "reload"

I currently have a pc which was originally W98. It was upgraded with a questionable XP pro cd. I would like to purchase a legal copy of Win XP Pro OEM. I have been told I may have to clear my drive to install this new OS. I would just like to "refresh" or copy over the old OS with the new the OS and install the new Key so I can get updates.

Does this sound like it will work??

Thanks

If your using a copy of XP pro that is illegal and not alloweed on these forums... If you buy a legal copy than a fresh install rather than a copy over is better....

Thanks for your answer.
I am aware of the room policies. I am asking how to correct an error. I have tons of files and I really do not want to risk a clean install at this time. I just wish to purchase the OS and applyy the new " legal" key to my existing install.

Can it be done?

Send a message via AIM to Panama Red
You can do a repair install with the legit disk and when you are prompted for the Product Key, use the new one. Make sure to visit Windows Update and get it fully updated too.

thanks

Thanks, Panama Red That's just about what I thought, but wasn't sure.
I wasn't the one who upgraded the PC but I want to get it legal.

You could try using Magic Jellybean to change the existing product key to the one on the legal copy you just bought. If it takes, you may have to reactivate Windows, but that should be painless.
