Windows freezes on motvcd.vxd file
Friends: I am running Windows 98SE. The computer is freezing on the wallpaper page with the arrowhead and hourglass cursors side by side. I can get nothing to move, mouse or keyboard. In safe mode I ran step-by-step confirmation and it tells me I am missing a file motvcd.vxd file. I have both the start-up diskette and CD-ROM for Windows 98SE. I ran both Scandisk and Registry Restore utilities but same result. How do I fix this problem? Thanks a lot.

That is your driver for your Motorola SM56 modem. If you can't even get into safe mode to uninstall and reinstall your modem drivers, try removing the modem from the computer.

GLC: Happy New Year! Thanks for your response. I removed that modem long time ago, then I went to "Find" and removed all files with "Motorola" references. I then went to "System ini" and ; out the reference to motvdc.vxd. Yet the computer still keeps freezing and keeps referencing to motvcd.vxd. Any new ideas? Would sure appreciate. Thanks.

Now you have to search the registry for motvcd.vxd. If that scares you, try using a registry cleaner such as CCleaner.

glc: Thanks for your help. I ran a check in Registry and cleaned all references to Motorola and SM56. I tried to run CCleaner but it wouldn't allow that in safe mode. I deleted the reference to motvcd.vxd in Win.ini yet same problem. Is there a good diagnostic program I can run from a bootable floppy? Thanks for your patience with me.

Did you search the registry for "motvcd.vxd"?
I believe Microsoft's Regclean will run in safe mode - you could try that. Dunno how effective it will be, but it wouldn't hurt. |
