B.S.O.D. driver problem

I am suffering intermittant BSOD and microsoft is telling me the most probable cause is a driver. If computer is idling are the various drivers having any effect ie. could the drivers for my printer be the cause if the printer is turned off?
Or does it mean that it would involve a driver that is active and being worked?

Have you checked Event Viewer for errors that occur when you receive BSOD? Report back with errors and your complete computer specs so that we may help you further. Also look in the Device Manager for any conflicts of drivers (you would see a yellow triangle with a ! or ?).

Nothing odd in event viewer also device manager OK.
I have found out that if i run in safe mode i can use my conversion programmes such as winavi and divxtodvd OK, but if i run them with computer booted normally 99% of the time i will get a BSOD with 7F warning.
This is not the only time i get BSOD but it appears to aggrevate the situation.
I notice when either programme is running the CPU is at or near 100% usage.
As i do not get a BSOD in safe mode it looks like a driver that is not running in safe mode is the problem has anybody got suggestions how i can find out which driver is the likely culprit?

Introduction to Stop Errors

"Stop errors in a nutshell are errors that are serious enough to cause Windows to stop. They are similar to the blue screen errors that were present on Windows 9x, however there is no option to try and resume the session in a Windows NT Stop Error (Windows 2000 and all XP members included)."

Are you getting a Stop 7F error message. If so,

General causes of "STOP 0x0000007F" errors
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/137539/en-us

CAUSE
This error message can occur if either of the following conditions exists:

• Your computer has hardware or software problems [(hardware failure is the most common cause).
• You try to over clock the speed of your computer's processor (for example, you set a 150 MhZ processor to run at 187 MhZ).
The above STOP error means a trap occurred in kernel mode and the trap is either one the kernel is not allowed to have or is always fatal. The most common causes of a STOP 0x7F are:
• Low-level hardware corruption, such as corrupt memory (RAM)
• Mismatched memory modules
• A malfunctioning motherboard

Thats why i want to isolate drivers, i would like to change motherboard but i think that is a bit over the top. I dont understand why the huge number that comes up alongside 7F means nothing to anybody and why microsoft bother to show it up if it cannot be understood by anybody.

The "huge numbers" you refered to mean alot. You can search for them here:
http://search.support.microsoft.com/search/?adv=1

Why are you are so certain it's a driver aka Software problem?

The most common causes of a STOP 0x7F are:
• Low-level hardware corruption, such as corrupt memory (RAM)
• Mismatched memory modules
• A malfunctioning motherboard

That driver is used by ATI AIW and VIVO cards.
I haven't heard of any problems with it but it looks like you get to be an exception.
What card do you have and what install Catalyst install package are you using?

I was assuming you had an ATI card instead of an nVidia card.
My bad for always thinking that WDM is ATI.
The part of the driver package you're having constant trouble with is the video capture driver.
Driver download packages are sometimes broken into sections; the driver itself, the control panel and the WDM(video capture driver); since not everyone has broadband. If yours is then you can just download the control panel and the drive and skip the WDM.
If you uninstall the current driver package and just install the those two does the problem continue?
Are there any updates for your motherboard chipset?
Also do you have any other software on your computer that would use video capture or is a form of video capture?

One way or another that would eliminate the software as the problem and point you straight at the hardware.
