After updating, Server 2003 won't show desktop

I just updated our school's 2003 Server (standard) from the MS Windows Update site . After doing the re-start and logging in, the computer will no longer show the desktop--only the background color and the mouse pointer. The mouse pointer will move, but other than that, there is no response in using the mouse or keyboard. There are no icons or toolbars on the screen. Workstations CAN log in to the domain and access files that are on the server. I have restarted several times and nothing changes. What can I do to get my desktop back?

I'd log into safe mode and uninstall the updates that broke it. Either that or do a system restore back to the checkpoint it made when installing the updates.

Fixed the problem by going in to safe mode and then disabling the Application Experience service.

Application Experience? I have never seen that. Is it part of the standard OS and if so what and where is it?
