system32/hal.dll is missing can't start windows

I have got windows XP on my laptop has been installed for some time and when I turned it on it said that hal.dll is missing. It won't go into windows and I don't want to reformat the hard disk. Is there anything that I can do?

Copy the file from a working XP system to a floppy drive (or download one) and then copy it to your System32 directory. You can do that from the command prompt using a startup floppy.

Have read the above several times & do not understand. Why is copying a file from a working system different from using an unliscensed version of XP? Not trying to argue, just don't understand.

Of course, there at least 2 other things I don't understand about computer use. LOL

Your just copying a file and not pirating a whole copy of windows, and the assumption is that your copy of XP is legit.

Actually I would think you should just be able to boot your PC with the XP cdrom, go into what is called the repair console, and the hall.dll file is found in the I386 folder and in the driver.cab file. Repair console is a commannd line, sort of like dos, function and you can use the help command to see all the commands available to you there.

Boot with the XP CD, use the repair console, log in, and at the C:\windows prompt, type CHKDSK /R

There is a good chance your hard drive is developing bad sectors.
