Getting me a little Ticked...

Why is it that when I use IE and am veiwing my hotmail inbox (which I rarely do), the little MSN messenger taskbar icon next to the clock appears and MSN messenger (even though I am not signed in) appears in the task manager? This is getting on my nerves, I never use MSN, I always use Trillian, and when I go to exit messenger I get a notice saying that I cannot close it because it is associated with some other application and gives a list of these applications (one of them being IE which is open).

Anyone know how to disable this stupid and useless feature woven into XP?

Right click and Open the Messenger. Then click on Tools>options (I think) and under preferences, click the option to not start when windows starts.

control panel-->add/remove programs-->add remove windows components--> untick the windows messenger icon

just did mine since i forgot to do it.i also took out outlook express

This is already done... and MSN does not start when Windows starts. However the moment I log into Hotmail to check my inbox the little icon pops up out of no where.

I don't really want to uninstall - I might start using it again - I am not a fan of Trillian's file tranfering (so I might use MSN occasionally).

ah...yes.file transfer with trillian is a bit screwed. sorry.cant help.avid fan of trillian. infact i have never used MSN messenger. moved straight from ICQ to MSN and Yahoo

*edit: i think i have it.
IE--> internet options--> programs tab--> mannage addons--> click "windows messenger" and select disable

im just guessing. cause i have uninstalled it, cant really test if it works

So is it MSN Messenger or is it Windows Messenger that you're seeing? Both are entirely different entities. To remove Windows messenger go to START > RUN > and paste this:
RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%\INF\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove
To uninstall MSN messenger, use the control panel > add/remove.

If you're using XP you can always HIDE the icon via taskbar properties.

It is MSN messenger, and like I said above, I don't really want to uninstall it - I will still use it occasionally. I decided to just hide it always - that gets rid of the icon, but the process is still running... I don't really know why logining into hotmail would cause this - do they not think that some people either never use MSN messenger, or have limited system resources and would perfer the process not to start up?

I'm not trying to be a smartaleck, but why not find a different free e-mail provider or use your ISP's mail?

MY ultimate email suggestion:
get a Gmail account.dowload Thunderbird.and set up POP forwarding from your Gmail to your Thunderbird.

its a POP account that acts somewhat like an IMAP account with 2.6GB of space!

I rarely use hotmail, and most of the time I use Gmail, but I am working on an article about different webmail providers and have been doing it from within IE because in IE I can better evaluate the amount of advertising in each inbox... whereas I already have Firefox & Opera set up to block most advertising anyway. Hotmail also doesn't allow POP forwarding like I already have set up with Gmail and Thunderbird. When I noticed the MSN messenger automatically started up, I was ticked off that MS and Hotmail would assume that I automatically would like to sign in just because I view my email... I then though heck, someone else must be experiencing the same issues and maybe found a fix. BTW... because of this, Hotmail will suffer slightly in my comparision with other Webmail providers.

So be it. Call it the way you see it. I personally wouldn't use Hotmail if they were the last e-mail provider on Earth and wouldn't use MSN Messenger if they were the last IM service on Earth too. I refuse to get a MSN Passport and refuse to use IE unless I *have* to.

yeah...my dad wanted to link his Hotmail(of 2MB of space) with his Outlook Express.
it uses HTTP...it is so FREAKING SLOW

Well, I have ads blocked in both Firefox and Opera, an me being uber lazy and looking for a shortcut decided it would be easier to open the services in all three rather than disable ad block.

Out of curiosity, what is that makes you not like MSN messenger and Hotmail? I am not a huge fan when there are other better choices out there (IMO), but I still use both out of habit and simplicity for already having them set up. Rather than using the MSN Messenger software itself though, I use Trillian.

I prefer the non-Microsoft alternatives. I like Windows 2000, I like Office 97, I like Streets and Trips, but you won't find any other Microsoft products on my computer. This dislike goes back to the days when IE4 turned Windows 95 into an unstable pile of crap and Microsoft allegedly put code into the OS to make Netscape crash. It's all about freedom of choice and I choose not to deal with Microsoft unless I have to or want to.
