Unhappy WinXP USB Blue Screen of Death - help?

I'm running Windows XP, latest service pack, latest updates. Dell desktop, pentium 4, Intel board, hyperthreading, etc.
Whenever I remove any USB device from my PC (like flashdrive or iPod), I instantly get the blue screen of death. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling the USB drivers...nothing helps. Might anyone have an idea of why this is happening? Please don't refer me to MSDN...I need to understand what's causing this...software, hardware, ???? Do you know how to figure it out? Any knowledgeable help is greatly appreciated.

Sounds like you're doing the removal without disconnecting the usb device first. Look near the clock in the lower right and you'll see an icon with a green arrow on it. Click on it before removing a usb device and select the device to "Safely remove hardware" before physically removing it from the pc.

Thanks for responding.
Nope...doesn't make any difference. Get blue screen of death instantly no matter how the device is removed. That's why I'm trying to understand what happens internally in the instant the device is removed from the port.

If you have Zone Alarm 6.0, uninstall it. This was causing a BSOD on me in Win2K when I ejected anything USB.

Post the bluescreen details, please. If it reboots, go into control panel, system, advanced, startup and recovery, and uncheck restart on error. This will let you read the bluescreen.

Thanks for responding. Nope, don't have Zone Alarm on this machine. Norton Internet Security. Had some stuff from Aluria. Also have Registry Mechanic and a couple other software programs. At one point, I installed some software to transfer data between a Canon camera to the PC and removed it but made no change.

The dump posts: IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL
STOP 0X0000000A ( 0XA0002D3A 0X00000002 0X00000001 0X806FCA16 )

There's a minidump...would you like to see it?

According to this MS KB article, you would need to do a repair of XP to correct the hardware issue. Look about 1/2 way down the page, Stop errro...after XP is installed.
