instaling xp problem

I have a compaq evo n400c, it had windows 2000 on it which became useless.

After uninstaling all traces if windows 2000 (I think) and reformatting several times, every time xp trys to load the setup from the cd, the computer just swiches of without warning, its not always at the same point, sometimes before you get any options to instal xp and sometimes when its as much as 75% though the first part of the instal. but without fail it shuts down, do any of you clever type know why it happens and how to fix it?

Please help I'm too thick to work it out myself!

Are you using a genuine factory pressed XP CD that's clean and not all scratched up? If so, test your ram.

How much ram is currently in the machine... I'm thinking you don't have enough.. To run XP good you need at least 256MB
