"bad" static ip, help!!!! NEVERMIND!!!
Ok,
we had to reimage some machines that use static ip's no problem. When I set the static ip's of 2 certain machines, they will not get on the network. I know the addresses are good(the pc's always use the same address), but for some reason these 2 certain ip's will not let pc's get on network. The "2" pc's will get on fine with dhcp, so I tried configuring my pc from dhcp to the static ip's in question, but did not work on my pc, still can't access network with the ips, so I put mine on dhcp again and all is well. The dns/gateway are all 100% correct, it's the ip addresses that are giving me problems. I thought maybe a duplicat somewhere by mistake, but no, those ip's are not on our network. Anybody have any thoughts? Tried disconnecting cables, disabling local area connection and reenabling, and power cycling the machines, but nothing. win2k sp1 Is it possible the ip is "stuck" and the dc will not allow use of it? Weird because these pc's ALWAYS use the same ip's. just a thought GOT IT! VLAN.....arrgh

well,
the vlan in my office is different than where the pc's came from. VLAN= virtual lan (I think) you can pretty much have more control with vlans, than just a single network. Wish i could explain more, but I am not much of an "explainer". |

Vlan is where you can segment a switch in to separate broadcast domains. Ex, you got a 24 port switch, using vlan, port 1-12 is on a different segment than port 13-24. However in order for the 2 segment to communicate, you'll need a router. Vlan is handy to separate different groups. I have implemented vlans on cisco switches.
