XP Pro activation question

Here is a interesting question for you tech gurus to answer... My in law bought a legal copy of Xp pro sealed and with a legal key.. When it was first installed we tried to activate it over the net. When trying to activate it MS said this key was used to many time. So we had to call MS to have it done... They said each time it is installed we would have to do the same thing...

No here is the kicker.. Right after that the system crashed, wehad to re reinstalled it all over again. But before we had it activated we choose the option to register it ( choose first time not to register it at this time). Then when we activated it over the net it worked beautifully.. What in the world caused the first issue in the first place...

I registered my copy of Windows and I still had to call it in afterwards so I don't know. When I was on 56k and did 2 reinstalls of XP due to Linux dual boot problems, I had to call it in each time. When we switched over to cable internet, I was able to authorize it over the internet fine. That's odd that on your first try you had to call it in.

Sounds like it may not have been a GENUINE legal copy. Was it sold as retail, upgrade, or OEM? What does the key sticker or certificate look like? Is it a holographic CD?

It was a OEM copy with the holographic CD. It also came with the samll manual that comes with the OEM copy and the license is a Genuine MS copy... This copy was also sealed in it origianl package...

I think Microsoft does a little bandwidth discrimination.
