Question Shutdown Very Slow

I don't know what happened, but my Shutdown time for Windows is very slow now. I click the Shutdown button and the screen will sit there for a couple of minutes, then the icons will go away and it'll sit there for another 5 minutes, and then finally the computer will shut off. Is there anything that anyone knows that I can do to fix this? Thanks

What kind of background programs are running on your computer?

Have you scanned for viruses, spyware, trojans and hijackers with updated scanners yet?

Yep, I scanned for viruses and nothing came up. Still a slow shutdown. I have no idea what that link is above this post. Didn't really help. Any other suggestions?

Exclamation Still No Answer for Slow Shutdown

I posted this same topic a couple of days ago. For some reason my shutdown is very slow. It happened all of a sudden too. I have scanned for viruses and spyware with several scanners. I have disabled all startup items excpet for Norton Anitvirus and Norton Personal Firewall. Startup is fine and can do it in about 20 seconds. Please please please does anyone have any answers for this problem. It really is annoying to sit and wait for 7 minutes for this thing to shutdown. Also, Log Off and Restart give me the same problem. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated, Thanks.

Windows may be waiting for a hung service to end itself. click start->run mscofig->services. try temporarily disabling non-microsoft services (if you think something might go wrong, make a system restore point just in case)

Why did you start another thread on this matter? You should have stuck to your original thread.

Did you try out any of those things in the link that glc posted?

And what kind of background programs are running on your computer?

I merged both threads. Please do not post multiple threads on the same problem.

Press the Crtl, Alt and Del keys at the same time to bring up the Windows Task Manager box and then click on the Processes tab. Then click on the Alt key and the Print Screen key. Bring up MS Paint and click on Edit in the menu bar and then Paste. Click on File, Save As and then save the image as a JPEG. You can then attach the image to your post. Under the Reply to Thread box is the Additional Options box...look for Attach Files and click on the Manage Attachments button and follow the instructions.

are you saving it as JPEG/gif and cropping the image so it just shows the processes?

i read about a slow shutdown problem in some tweak website somewhere. it think it was to do with being on a LAN or something although im not 100%. are you on a network? ill try to find the article about it now. (im assuming your using the XP in your signature)

EDIT:
http://www.tunexp.com/tips/maintain_...slow_shutdown/
this isnt the one i saw but it could help you if you are running a nvidia gfx card (which you arent :/ )

http://windowsxp.mvps.org/slowshutdown.htm
also not what im thinking of but could be relevant...

http://www.tweakxp.com/article36963.aspx
another.....still not the one im looking for

ok i give up, i cannot find it anywhere, i even looked through my stash of xp tweaks ive got saved to my hdd. if you are on a lan try this..(this minght work it minght not)

disble you lan connection and reeboot then try to shutdown again, if that fixes the problem you know what the cause is. i think its something to do with scheduled tasks or something like that, look at the scheduled tasks on your computer also.

Try this: After you paste the screen shot into Paint go ahead and save it as a .BMP and then use IrfanView to save the .BMP as a .GIF file and then attach the .GIF file to your post.

Or paste the screen shot right into IrfanView and then save the capture as a .GIF file. It'll be much smaller than a .BMP or .JPG file and the image will be pretty clear.

Question OK, Here is a GIF of my current processes

These are the usual proceeses that are running when I shutdown my computer. With a GIG of RAM I never notice anything wrong with start up and doing things when working with my comp like Photoshop and AutoCAD. Only during shutdown is it really annoying. Well here it is, thanks

The image quality is fine.

What is BigFix? Is it something you installed on your computer? What does it do?

And I see AOL on there. Are those for a broadband connection?

Question Answers

BIGFIX is a program that Gateway has installed on my computer and that I have found useful. Number one, it gives me a direct link to online tech support where I can "chat" with a representative, and number two, it allows Gateway to work with Microsoft and gives me news about recent issues Microsft has and often will give me the patches and updates for it. For example, when Microsoft announced the Meta File problem, Gateway sent me the patch directly through this software. For safety and security, I have allowed for the software to load on startup and it'll tell me any problems within 15 seonds of startup. The AOL thing is well...not because they are my ISP...I use a local cable provider which provides me the highspeed, but since my parents have AOL at home, I use the broadband services that AOL provides...satellite radio and video...kinda nice. So I guess AOL throws that stuff in my process que. Anyway, any other problems that anyone see? That's all of em right there. I really don't know where the problem is. Thanks guys....
