Windows 98 not loading correctly.
Ok, I have a Gateway 400 running Windows 98. Lately when I have gone to start the computer it goes to either the "choose a startup mode" screen, or tries to start up normally and stops (freezes up, really) at the Windows 98 screen with the clouds. The computer also does not recognize my CD-Rom drive, (with a System Restoration CD, or Windows 2000 install CD, because I was going to try and upgrade it.) I am able to start the computer up in safe mode, but it won't read the external drive that I was going to back everything up onto anymore. (The external drive is FAT32, so it is not an NTFS format issue.)
I don't have many files on the computer that I couldn't live without, I rarely use it unless I want to get online or listen to music late at night in my room, but I would like for it to work again. Any help is appreciated. |

There will be no CD drive or USB recognition in safe mode in 98. Best way to back everything up is remove the hard drive and put it in another computer - either on the IDE or using an external housing.

Does "... the "choose a startup mode" screen.." mean the MicroSoft Windows 98 Startup Menu (embedded in IO.sys)?
If so, (and the problem is less than five days old) you can choose Command prompt only and at the C:\> prompt, type in scanreg/restore. You'll be provided with up to five choices (calendar dates really). Choose a date which preceeds the problem. This restores your registry to a time when it worked. "The computer also does not recognize my CD-Rom drive, (with a System Restoration CD, or Windows 2000 install CD, because I was going to try and upgrade it.)" Do you mean booting with the CD, or just trying to run it from Safe Mode? If booting, ensure the boot device sequence in the machines bios has the CDROM drive as a choice prior to the hard disk.

I was trying to boot the computer with the CD, thanks Dan, the problem was that the computer was set up to boot with the hard disk first.
And this is the reason I choose PC Mech over all the other sites.... |

Glad to help. So is the problem fixed, or gone away due to an upgrade?
