error message blue screen

On bootup in dos the first message i get is secondary slave ATAPI incompatable. The pc like to reboot itself. What does this mean. I am using a SATA as my primary drive, the cd-dvd reader as a master then a second ide hard drive as a slave on ide slot 1, then a dvd burner as a master on ide slot 2. I got a blue screen saying pfn_list corrupt? So i reinstalled windows and still have the same blue screen message.

thx drew

Is this a new build? Or has it worked in the past.

It's recommended that you keep the optical drives on a separate IDE cable from you HDDs. Try the HDD as Master on the Primary, then put your burner as Master on the Secondary and the reader as Slave. If you have the newer cables, you can put all in the proper positions but jumper them to Cable Select.

If switching the cabling doesn't help, there are a few mentions on the net of this error having been traced to faulty memory (or memory module placement, for dual-channel setups - if you are using dual channel, make sure the modules are in same-color slots, or check your motherboard manual or online user forums for your board to see which slot order is recommended).

MemTest86+ can test the modules (http://www.memtest.org)

One thread mentions going back to stock speeds if overclocking (always a good idea when troubleshooting).

Here are a few of the threads with your error:

Best of luck

Did you try changing the cabling yet? I'd test the memory, too - just to see. Might check in the Bios Setup, too, to make sure that those IDE controllers are set to "Auto".
