Insufficient resources to continue XP Home install

I am re-installing XP Home from an OEM CD.

Was working before except for a virus that I couldn't remove.

Re-formatted hard drive, NTFS in Recovery Console.

Was able to load all files after changing CD Rom drive and cleaning CD, but when it reboots, I get error message at GUI:

"Insufficient resources to complete this API" and sytems restarts.

Have unplugged backup hard drive, have rotated memory stick to other slot, still get same message. Removed the AGP video card, same error. Switched CD-Rom reader, same error message.

ASROCK K7S41GX mainboard
AMD 1050 XP Processor, 333MHz front side bus
512MB 333DDR memory

Haven't been able to find anything in windows knowledge base, don't have separate pc to run mem-test, unable to boot to O/S to run memtest.

Help

Question Memtest

I am now running memtest to see if there is a memory problem and will post results.

On an slightly related note, I had tried using the recovery console again. The last time I did, I HAD NOT set an administrator password, and now it requires one. I have no idea how it got there, or what it is. Is there anything I can do?

You might want to zero fill the hard drive to put it in a like-new condition. The WinXP installation may go smoother.

Zero-fill utilities:

Darik's Boot And Nuke

KillDisk

Disconnect all card readers and other peripherals when installing Windows.

Thanks for the suggestion.

I have all ready unplugged all cards from the machine. Ran memtest 86 and no errors displayed. I have completely wiped the drive with "drivekill."

I left the machine to load XP this morning, expecting to return home and find it asking me for the product key. Instead it was turned off, and when I started it up got the message "NTDLR missing, press ctrl-alt-del to restart."

Re-booted to floppy, tried to go to c drive, got invalid drive error message. Am now trying from scratch again.

I feel for you. I installed winME on an old computer that was given to me.
It installed wonderfully, and ran for three days. On the fourth, I started getting error messages:
No operating system found.
Invalid disk, replace disk and press any key to reboot.
Then came the strange errors about int 13, and could not find hooks
That's when I KNEW I had a hardware problem.
I tested the memory with tufftest and it passed ALL ZEROS, ALLONES, CHECKERBOARD, MARCHING ONES, and failed the WALKING ONES test.
I replaced the memory, and reinstalled windows. It works like a champ now.
