Increasing RAM

What advantage is there in fitting extra RAM i am running at 512 with 2 256 sticks.I have 2 slots available, what difference can i expect? CPU is pentium 4 at 3.02GHz.

It'll depend if you're currently using all or most of the available ram. Can open task manager and look for available ram in the performance tab. I have a gig of ram in this machine and currently have over 300 megs available/unused/sitting around collecting dust. Adding more for me would be a waste.

Adding more RAM is a good idea if you currently notice your computer constantly going to the swap file while you're working. Adding more RAM will reduce the swap file usage and allow your computer to run more efficiently.

Thanks for that, will i notice any difference in speed of say converting avi files?

Probably not, unless you are running a lot of programs at the same time that you are converting them.

Ram is cheap enough - put as much in as you can afford. We recommend 1 gig for XP regardless of how you use the computer.
