Question Win 2000 Pro - English/Japanese question..

Hi all,

Firstly, I live in Japan so I am using a 'Japanese PC', the keyboard and Windows ME (at present) are both Japanese. Also, I would speak with Gateway (where I bought my PC) but they won't support the use of another OS on my system, they gave no advice. Only they had support in English, so I can't ask another Japanese PC shop or tech centre.

I would like to change my OS to Win 2000 Pro, and I would like it to be 'in English'. I have read that Win 2k Pro can support multiple languages, including Japanese, therefore if I buy the Japanese version would I be able to change the main language/information boxes/system errors etc. to be shown as all in English? In other words buy Japanese Win 2k Pro, but view it all in English?

The alternative of course is to buy the English version (from abroad) and install that, but..... I don't think it will install on my system. I once tried installing an English version of Win ME on my system but a message appeared saying something about (sorry my Japanese is poor) 'the language (version) is incompatible/incorrect to use with this system'. Therefore I worry that buying the English version of Win 2k Pro will not install either.

Can anyone offer any advice or help please? It's a tough one I think!

Many thanks in advance,

Yuda.

No, unfortunately you can't change the language on the fly. If you purchase a japanese version, the english version is not available.

If you want a combination of the English and Japanese Windows on your system you can create a dual boot with both versions. I don't think there are other options available.

Thanks for the idea, but I don't want to dual-boot

I'm now trying to find out whether I can run the English version on my system, getting that answer is a lot harder than I thought

Oh well!
