You mean playing a DVD-Video ? For that, you need DVD playback software. Have you installed any ? Like PowerDVD or WinDVD, for example.

well , yes and no

I had a software program installed but only had picture and no sound, maybe that was before i installed sp1......according to ms website i should be able to play dvds in windows media player 9 if i have sp1 installed...maybe that is way off base and i just ain`t reading far enough into it to get the whole picture.......I will reinstall that program now and see if it works....it was a free dvd player and locked up the pc almost immediately upon use......you get what you pay for........can you suggest a free player that works well???
I wil go back and bang my head some more and give it another try........
never did this part before (install dvd ) always something new to learn

Later

The Dell should have come with DVD playback software - I think it was called Cinemaster. Look through your CD's that came with it.

I believe once the proper codecs are installed, then you can use WMP9. You have to install the software to get these codecs.
